Local report — Tyler leads CWU men’s hoops

ELLENSBURG —Toussaint Tyler scored 29 points and dealt nine assists Tuesday night as Central Washington scored a 91-87 victory over Another Level Blue Angels in a basketball exhibition in Nicholson Pavilion.

Tyler, who missed all of last season with an elbow injury, hit 10 of 18 field goals including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Brandon Magee came off the bench to score 17 for the Wildcats, Jordan Coby had 14 and Kevin Davis led a 65-44 rebounding advantage with 18.

Brett Weisner scored 19 points and Morris Anderson had 18 for the Blue Angels, who included ex-Wildcats Ron vanderSchaaf, Coby Gibler, Chris Scott and Drew Harris on their roster.

Central officially opens its season Friday night at home against Warner Pacific.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

GNAC kudos for Franks sisters

ELLENSBURG — Hillary and Brittany Franks, seniors on Central Washington’s women’s soccer team, have earned all-GNAC recognition.

Hillary Franks, a defender, was named to the all-conference second team while her twin sister Brittany, a forward, received honorable mention.

Hillary Franks anchored Central’s defensive front and Brittany Franks totaled three goals and three assists.

Both played for West Valley before starting their careers at CWU, which culminated with 9-5-4 overall and 8-4-2 GNAC records. The conference wins were the most in school history.

Other Wildcats honored by the GNAC were coach Michael Farrand, who was named co-coach of the year with Seattle Pacific’s Chuck Sekyra, junior Carson McKole who made the first team and seniors Amy Pate and Miranda Heslep who were named to the second team.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

YVCC camp moved to Davis Gym

A basketball clinic for special needs children, hosted by Yakima Valley Community College and Children’s Village and scheduled for Saturday, has been moved.

The clinic, set to run from 10-11:30 a.m., will be held at the Davis High School gym instead of YVCC’s Sherar Gym.
