Local report: Cold-shooting Central loses GNAC opener

December 2, 2011 by

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Unable to overcome its own cool shooting nor its opponents’ scorching accuracy, Central Washington University’s women’s basketball team dropped its GNAC opener, 77-61, to Western Oregon on Thursday.

Junior Alex Dunn led the Wildcats with 19 points and three 3-pointers, but Central was hindered by 29.2-percent shooting from the field.

Western Oregon, meanwhile, connected on 33 of 52 shots for better than 63 percent. Jade Haas and Rylee Peterson combined for 43 points, making 20 of 27 shots.

“Our shots were out of rhythm, all of which was a result of Western Oregon shooting well,” said Central coach Shawn Nelson. “They played a lot harder than we did and it showed.”

Central Washington (0-1, 2-2) plays at St. Martin’s University in Lacey on Saturday.
