Swimming: WV’s Hausken wins backstroke title

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — With a winning margin of nearly six seconds, West Valley’s Kian Hausken captured the 100-yard backstroke final at Saturday’s Class 3A district swimming and diving championships at Central Washington University.

Hausken, a freshman, clocked 57.77 seconds to qualify for state and he picked up a second Valley best in the 100 free, placing third in 50.88.

The top two finishers in the Class 4A and 2A-1A meets and the 3A winners qualified for the state championships in Federal Way on Feb. 17-18.

In the 2A-1A meet, Prosser’s Will Burgett and Nolan Saam went 1-2 in the 100 breast and helped the Mustangs win the 200 free relay in a season best 1:34.67.

Local divers won two of the three meets with Eisenhower’s Jacob Hino topping the 4A field with a score of 324.40 and Naches Valley’s David and Daniel Whitmore finishing 1-2 in the 2A-1A competition.
