All five starters on title team to play||

YAKIMA, Wash. — The Class 4A state champion Davis Pirates boys basketball team will get one more run together.

The starting quintet of seniors, who under the guide of Davis coach Eli Juarez led the Pirates to the 4A title earlier this month, will make up a sizable chunk of Yakima’s team in the 19th annual Media Classic on Sunday at Yakima Valley Community College.

The girls game will get things started at 4 p.m. with boys scheduled to tip off at 6. Tickets are $5 and children 5 and younger are free.

The doubleheader at Sherar Gym features all-stars from the circulation areas of the Yakima Herald-Republic and the Tri-City Herald.

Davis guard David Trimble will be making his fourth Media Classic appearance while teammate Devonte Luckett is slated for his third.

It’s the Media Classic debut for the Pirates’ remaining starters — LeVonte Allen, Cooper Kupp and Ray Navarro.

Sunnyside’s Israel Manzo and White Swan’s Lawrence Fiander are making their third appearances, while it’s the second Classic for West Valley’s Austin Strock.

Yakima owns a commanding 18-4 advantage in the series.

On the girls side, West Valley’s Paige Albrecht, Wapato’s Sammi Jo Blodgett and White Swan’s Amber Jones are back for the Yakima squad.

Grandview’s Marissa Caballero and Payton Parrish are on the Yakima team this year after playing for Tri-Cities last year.

The proceeds from this year’s game will fund a scholarship at YVCC in memory of Wapato’s Hannah Cordova, a Yaks basketball player who died in a 2011 auto accident just days before the NWAACC tournament. YVCC would go on to win the title.

The series started in 1994 as the Newspaper Classic but became the Media Classic soon after.

From 2000 to 2003, the series consisted of small- and large-school games but returned to just one boys and one girls contest in 2004. The rosters were expanded to a maximum of 15 players.

The teams are selected by the Herald-Republic and Tri-City Herald sports staffs.
