Strong start for SCAC duo

Wanderscheid, Iacolucci in lead at 1A state golf||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Rylee Iacolucci and Bree Wanderscheid shot the identical score Tuesday and, not surprisingly, they find themselves in exactly the same spot on their respective leaderboards — in first place.

The two golfers came into the Class 1A state golf tournament as champ-ionship contenders and both lived up to the billing with strong rounds on The Home Course’s challenging layout.

Both fired rounds of 2-over 74, with Iacolucci taking a one-shot lead into today’s final round on the course in Dupont, while Wanderscheid’s 74 left her tied for first with Elma’s Alexis Keating.

Iacolucci, a senior at Cle Elum, may have the lead, but he’s by no means in the clear, with five golfers within three shots of the lead. Ilwaco’s Ross Kukula is second at 75, with Omak’s Ryder Lewis and Lynden Christian’s Willy Scholten tied at 76, and Orting’s Joe Harvie and Chewelah’s Dylan Long both at 77.

Iacolucci will play with Kukula and Lewis in today’s final pairing.

There will be more of a match-play feel on the girls side, with Wanderscheid and Keating six shots clear of the third-place golfer and Keating’s sister, Lauryn Keating. It’s another four shots back to the fourth-place golfer, Freeman’s Alyssa Maine.

Wanderscheid, Alexis Keating and Maine will be in the final group this morning.

That was the good news on an otherwise disappointing day for local golfers.

Also in 1A, five other girls were among the top 32 — Highland’s Haley Gredvig (20th), Goldendale’s Sawyer Ross (24th), Cle Elum’s Sarah Winebrenner (28th), and La Salle’s Claire Moorer (29th) and Grace Martin (32nd) — although only Wanderscheid and Gredvig made the cut for today’s final round. On the boys side, Goldendale’s Andrew Wall is 26th and La Salle’s Jack Sutton is 36th, with both making the cut.

In Class 2A, the best local showing came in the girls event, with Selah’s Taylor Jones 29th, and East Valley’s Allyson Ingraham 39th to make the cut. On the boys side, no local golfer made the cut, with East Valley’s Andrew Raab and Prosser’s Devin Bender the top performers Tuesday, finishing 44th and 46th, respectively.

In Class B, Riverside Christian’s Gage Neiffer is 20th in the boys, with teammates Derrick Phelps 25th and Matt Guchee 30th. The Crusaders’ Ashley Borello is 32nd in the girls event.
