Pak gets bats going against Aberdeen

SELAH, Wash. — Preseason concerns about the offense were put off for at least a day as the Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak had no trouble piling up runs in their Senior Legion season openers Saturday.

Chris Walker led the assualt, going 5 for 9 for the day with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI in leading Yakima Valley to an 11-2, 22-2 sweep of Aberdeen at Carlon Park.

Walker had five RBI, including a three-run homer, in the opener, with Cole Gilman, Steven Wagar and Jace VanDeBrake adding two hits each. Wagar had two doubles, including a two-run drive in a nine-run third inning. Koleman Johns struck out eight in five innings.

Johns had two doubles and four RBI in the second game, with Gilman adding a three-run double, Wagar two hits and two RBI, and Walker three hits.

The teams will play a single game at noon today at Carlon Park.

Beetles split opening doubleheader

YAKIMA, Wash. — After being kept in check in the opener, the Yakima Pepsi Beetles broke loose in the second game to split their Senior Legion season-opening doubleheader Saturday.

Nate Giles went 4 for 4 with three doubles and four RBI, and Hunter Hanson had two hits and three RBI to power Yakima to a 17-7 victory over Columbia Basin in the second game at Parker Field.

Cody Johns, who starred at Naches Valley, threw five strong innings in Columbia Basin’s 9-6 victory in the opener. Michael Woodkey had two hits and two RBI, and Julian Rivera and Josiah Mitchum both had two hits and an RBI for Yakima in the game.

In the second game, Trenton Dupre added two hits and two RBI, and Ryker Ford two hits and one RBI for the Beetles.

The teams play a single game at 3:30 p.m. today at Parker Field.

Davis trio lead all-state nominees

NACHES, Wash. — The Davis trio of LeVonte Allen, Jens Jensen and Zach Alexander topped the list of 12 nominees from Saturday’s two All-State feeder games at Naches High School.

The all-state rosters will be announced early this week, with the games next Saturday at Sunday at Yakima County Stadium.

Allen Jensen and Alexander helped Team B post a 4-3 victory over Team A in the first game Saturday. Each player had two hits, with Alexander collecting two doubles and an RBI, Allen driving in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and Jensen also part of a combined two-hitter by four Team B pitchers.

Team A won the second game 5-3, with West Valley’s Cody LaRiviere going 3 for 3 with a solo home run, and Rams teammate Alhanon Miller driving in a run.

Both players were all-state nominees.

Other local players nominated were Noel Gonzalez and Cole Gilman from Naches Valley, Hugo Lemus from East Valley, and Nolin Bare from Goldendale.

Gonzalez was named MVP of Saturday’s doubleheader.
