College report: B. Franks scores to lead Central

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Brittany Franks’ goal in the 55th minute proved to be the game-winner Thursday as Central Washington kept its women’s soccer playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 GNAC win over Western Oregon.

The victory improved the Wildcats to 6-2-2 in conference play and 7-3-4 overall. They’ll play their final home match Sunday against Saint Martin’s.

Franks’ goal was assisted by Danielle Brandli and gave CWU a 2-0 lead. Serena Tomaso scored in the first half off an assist from Tarah Duty.

The Wolves scored in the 84th minute, but Central’s defense and goalkeeper Kayla Lipston preserved the victory.

First half: 1, CWU, Serena Tomaso (Tarah Duty), 36:16.

Second half: 2, CWU, Brittany Franks (Danielle Brandli), 54:37; 3, WOU, LaChante Horton (Lindsay Bauman), 83:08.

Saves: Kayla Lipston (CWU) 7; Brittney Rigtrup (WOU) 8.

GNAC meet at Apple Ridge

YAKIMA, Wash. — Alaska Anchorage will attempt to defend its men’s and women’s championships Saturday in the 11th annual GNAC cross country championships to be held at Apple Ridge Run on Naches Heights.

The women’s 6,000-meter race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with the men’s 8,000-meter competition following at 11 a.m.

Pre-meet activities will be held at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Yakima.
