College roundup — Gonzales’ goal leads YVCC past CBC

YAKIMA — Kaylah Gonzales scored Yakima Valley’s only goal in Saturday’s East Region soccer match with Columbia Basin, but that was all YVCC would need for a key 1-0 victory on the Yaks’ field.

Gonzales’ penalty-kick tally came in the 70th minute, and goalkeeper Amanda Freisz made it stand up with four saves as YVCC improved to 6-3-0 in region play and 8-4-1 overall.

The Hawks (5-3-1, 7-3-1) are the NWAACC’s third-ranked team.

Yakima Valley has another important match coming up Wednesday at second-ranked Spokane.

Central suffers tie with SFU

ELLENSBURG — Though Central Washington dominated play against Simon Fraser on Saturday, the Wildcats were unable to score.

As a result, CWU settled for a 0-0 tie with the Clan in GNAC women’s soccer play.

Central outshot SFU 34-4, but nonetheless fell to 5-2-2 in conference play and 6-3-4 overall. Simon Fraser is 0-8-1 and 1-9-1.

CWU goalkeeper Kayla Lipston was needed for only one save while the Clan’s Amelia Ng recorded 10, including stopping a penalty kick by Carson McKole in the 71st minute.

First overtime: No scoring.

Second overtime: No scoring.

CROSS COUNTRY

CWU’s Santos 4th at PLU Invite

TACOMA — Central Washington’s Manuel Santos finished fourth overall in the men’s competition in Saturday’s PLU Invitational cross country meet.

A senior from Davis, Santos clocked 26 minutes, 28 seconds over the eight-kilometer course. Freshmen Ryan Loutsis and Peter Troianello, the latter runner from Eisenhower, were 18th and 34th, respectively, and were CWU’s only other men’s competitors.

Sarah Flatebo and Adriana Zazula were Central’s top women runners, placing 25th and 26th, respectively.

The Wildcats will host the GNAC Championships next Saturday at Apple Ridge Run on Naches Heights, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Wildcats fall to Seattle Pacific

SEATTLE — Jordan Offutt and Meg Ryan combined for 25 kills Saturday night, but were unable to prevent Central Washington from falling 3-1 to 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific in GNAC volleyball action.

The Falcons prevailed 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-23, improving to 8-2 in conference play and 14-5 overall. CWU, which fell to 5-6 and 11-8, continues GNAC play at home next Saturday against Northwest Nazarene

CWU highlights: Jordan Offutt 15 kills, 9 digs; Meg Ryan 10 kills; Erin Smith 6 kills, 2 blocks; Carlee Marble 43 assists; Kaely Kight 28 digs; Chelsie Vea 11 digs; Marcy Hjellum 10 digs.
