Colleges: YVCC thumps Treasure Valley

YAKIMA, Wash. — Kaylah Gonzales and Elizabeth Figueroa scored two goals each Saturday as Yakima Valley beat Treasure Valley 5-1 in an East Region women’s soccer match on the Yaks’ field.

YVCC, despite being decimated by injuries this season, improved to 7-4-0 in the region — good for third place — and 9-5-1 overall.

Gonzales got both of her scores in the first half, with Figueroa assisting on the first and Katy Allen aiding the second.

Figueroa then punched home two goals within the span of a minute in the second half, the second coming off Briana Mares’ assist.

After the Chukars (4-7-0, 4-9-0) scored, Allen got Yakima Valley’s final tally with an assist from Alma Garcia.

Amanda Freisz, meanwhile, recorded six saves.

The Yaks continue their quest for an NWAACC playoff berth at home against Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday, then meet unbeaten Walla Walla next Saturday in their final home match.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

Santos 16th in GNAC meet

NACHES HEIGHTS, Wash. — Manuel Santos finished 16th to lead a nine-runner Central Washington contingent Saturday in the GNAC cross country championships at Apple Ridge Run.

Santos, a senior from Davis, clocked 26 minutes, 2 seconds over the 8,000-meter course. CWU’s Nathan Minor was 30th in 26:34 and Nathan Power placed 50th in 27:23.

The Wildcats finished eighth in the 10-team competition, which was won by Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves placed five runners in the top 10 including winner Micah Chelimo (24:24).

Central’s women finished 10th, with redshirt freshman Connie Morgan leading the Wildcats with a 24:25 clocking over the 6,000-meter layout.

UAA’s women claimed that title also, led by Ruth Keino’s overall winning time of 21:26.

Wildcats swept by NW Nazarene

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jordan Offutt put down 16 kills, including eight in the third set, but Central Washington was unable to overcome an efficient Northwest Nazarene squad in GNAC volleyball action Saturday night.

The Crusaders won 25-21, 25-16, 25-21, dealing CWU its second straight loss and dropping the Wildcats to 5-7 in conference play and 11-9 overall.

Meg Ryan added six kills and Selah graduate Erin Smith had five.

CWU highlights: Jordan Offutt 16 kills; Meg Ryan 6 kills; Erin Smith 5 kills; Cheltzie Williams 5 kills; Carlee Marble 17 assists, 7 digs; Devin Larson 17 assists; Kaely Kight 19 digs.
