Local report: Goldendale’s Baize starts well

YAKIMA, Wash. — Bull rider Laine Baize of Goldendale had the best ride of the opening night of the Pro-West Rodeo finals, an 81-pointer at Frank Beard Arena in State Fair Park that topped season points leader Colby Reilly of Ephrata.

Season leaders Jacob Stacy in saddle bronc and Noah Bayes in bareback continued their winning ways. Stacy, of Soap Lake, put up a 74-point ride that bettered Moxee’s Danny Alires (67 points) and Buck Sprague of Ellensburg (62), while Bayes tied another Oregon cowboy, Jared Bain, with a 76-point ride to top the night’s bareback round.

Only two of the 10 steer wrestlers were able to catch and throw their steers, with Nick Gutzwiler of East Wenatchee earning the fastest time at 4.55 seconds. Other first-round winners included Brad Goodrich of Hermiston, Ore., in tie-down roping, Yelm’s Jennifer Frohman in breakaway roping, Jordan Crossley of Hermiston in barrel racing and team ropers Chris Hays and Mike Wallen.

Today’s second go-round gets under way at 2 p.m.

Yaks win on the road

WENATCHEE — Tori Farias had 14 kills and 19 digs, and Traci Schweyen and Raini Weaver added eight kills each as Yakima Valley defeated Wenatchee Valley in four sets Friday night in East Region action.

Kylie Huffman had 24 assists for the Yaks (5-2 region, 18-6 overall).

YVCC returns to action next Friday, hosting Treasure Valley.

YVCC highlights: Tori Farias 14 kills, 19 digs; Traci Schweyen 8 kills; Raini Weaver 8 kills; Danielle Najera 18 digs; Kylie Huffman 24 assists.

COLLEGE SOCCER

YVCC claims forfeit win

Yakima Valley was awarded a forfeit victory for today’s scheduled women’s soccer game with Southwestern Oregon.

The game was forfeited because the Lakers recently had a coaching change and are experiencing transportation and supervision issues, according to a YVCC statement.

YVCC, 4-1-0 in East Region play and 6-2-0 overall, visits Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.
