College roundup: CWU men fall in season opener

November 12, 2011 by

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Two of basketball’s fundamentals, taking care of the ball and making free throws, haunted Central Washington in its men’s basketball opener Friday night.

The Wildcats committed 22 turnovers and made only 19 of 31 free throws in a 92-89 loss to Warner Pacific in Nicholson Pavilion.

The NAIA Knights of Portland, who counted the game as an exhibition after winning three of their first four games, scored 31 points off Central turnovers. They also made 31 of 38 free throws which helped them overcome a 10-point CWU lead with 14:13 to play.

“We didn’t make our free throws down the stretch,” said Central coach Greg Sparling. “And the points-off-turnover deal is usually flip-flopped for us. It was our first true game with a relatively young team.”

Sparling said point guard Lacy Haddock, sidelined with a knee injury, should be available for next Friday and Saturday’s games at the Sodexo Challenge in Seattle, which will enable Toussaint Tyler to move from that position to his normal off guard spot.

Tyler led the Wildcats with 19 points while Brandon Magee had 18, Kevin Davis 15, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, and former Davis standout Jordan Starr came off the bench for 12 points.

Guard Nick Schultens scored 19 points to lead WPC, which took the lead with 10:20 left and didn’t trail thereafter. Central had a chance to tie it with 1:44 to go, but missed a free throw and the Knights made two on their next possession.

CWU coach has once again assembled an exciting and entertaining mens team. They are one forward short of returnng to the greatness of last years team. Their current starting forward consistently racks up more fouls than points or rebounds and will hobble this team all season long.
