Local report: CWU women rout Walla Walla U.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Kelsi Jacobson’s career-high 23 points led seven Central Washington scorers in double figures as the Wildcats routed Walla Walla University 115-34 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday night in Nicholson Pavilion.

Central (8-14), which upset Seattle Pacific on Saturday night, set school records for points and scoring margin.

Jacobson, coming off the bench, was 9 of 15 from the field including 4 of 8 from 3-point range.

CWU shot 53 percent compared with 23 percent for Walla Walla. The Wildcats also amassed a 44-29 rebounding advantage and forced 34 turnovers while committing only five.

Central resumes GNAC play Thursday at Simon Fraser.

Wildcats outlast Monterey Bay

LAS VEGAS — Central Washington scored five times in the first two innings and the Wildcats went on to a 5-3 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday in the MSUB Desert Stinger tournament.

It was Central’s first win of the season after two losses Friday and two more Saturday.

Carrina Wagner’s two-run single in the second inning Sunday was the big blow while Maria Gau scattered seven hits against Monterey Bay (8-2).

CWU is scheduled to open GNAC play Friday with a doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene.

Central finishes road trip 1-5

SEASIDE, Calif. — Brandon Wang hit his second home run of the season for Central Washington on Sunday, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome a seven-run deficit and fell 9-3 to Cal State Monterey Bay.

Brett Bielec and David Leid had two hits each for the Wildcats, who concluded their road trip with a 1-5 record.

CWU will meet Saint Martin’s on Friday in the Inland Cellular Tournament at Lewiston, Idaho.

Gutierrez, Browning win regionals

MATTAWA, Wash. — Mabton’s Mary Ellen Gutierrez and Naches Valley’s Kourtney Browning won titles in Saturday’s Region IV girls tournament at Wahluke High School.

Gutierrez, a junior, registered three straight first-period pins in the 112-pound bracket, and Browning, a sophomore, also pinned her way to the 130 title.

The top three placers qualified for the state championships in Tacoma on Friday and Saturday.

Sunnyside’s Abby Elizondo (130) and Jessica Cardenas (170) earned second-place finishes, as did Grandview’s Marizza Birrueta (100) and Granger’s Alejandra Rodriguez (145).
