Swimming: Divers, relays stellar at state

February 18, 2012 by

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Naches Valley twins David and Daniel Whitmore find themselves in almost identical position in diving, and the Selah and Prosser relay teams doubled up their success on the first day of the Class 2A-1A state swimming and diving championships.

In addition, Prosser’s 100-yard butterfly tandem of Will Burgett and Nolan Saam both reached the finals, and Eisenhower’s Jacob Hino overcame a slow start to stand seventh heading into today’s final dives in the Class 4A meet at the King County Aquatic Center.

David Whitmore, who came into state ranked second, finished in that spot after Friday’s eight dives. His total of 250.45 points leaves him 47 points out of first with three dives remaining today. Daniel Whitmore is not far behind in fourth place with a total of 207.15.

In the 2A-1A 100 breast preliminary, Burgett finished fifth with a time of 1 minute, 2.85 seconds, and Saam was seventh in 1:03.31 to make today’s final. The top eight advanced.

Those two also helped Prosser make the finals in both the 200-medley and 200-free relays. They teamed with Tim Bowen and James Wildman to place seventh in the medley relay (1:47.23), and eighth in the free relay (1:34.69).

Selah enjoyed similar success with its relays, as the team of Nolan Frampton, Garrett Borchert, Carson Petrea and Scott Smith was fifth in the medley relay (1:45.15) and seventh in the free relay (1:34.00), dropping more than 2 seconds off their previous best in both events.

The sweep means the Vikings will place in both relays for the second straight season.

Hino, who was ranked 11th entering state, had a total of 211.85 points on eight dives Friday to move into seventh place with three dives remaining today.

In the 3A meet, West Valley’s Kian Hausken placed 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.34 seconds and will swim in today’s consolation final. Diver Brian Pulsipher and the Rams’ 400-free relay team did not advance.
