Roberson will coach CWU defense

March 31, 2012 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Blaine Bennett had recruited Malik Roberson once before, thereby getting him started in college football.

And now Roberson, a Spokane native lured to Washington State by then-graduate assistant Bennett in 1989, has reunited with his one-time suitor, having been named Central Washington’s defensive coordinator on Friday.

“I was a graduate assistant (at WSU) for two years, one for Dennis Erickson and one for Mike Price,” Bennett said. “Spokane was an area Coach Price had me help him recruit in, and that’s how Malik and I first met.”

Roberson, from Lewis-Clark High School, played two years for Price in Pullman before leaving. He served as an assistant at L-C for two years, then resumed his playing career as a defensive lineman under Mike Dunbar at Central in 1994.

Coaching stops at Eastern Washington (2000-07) and Washington State (2008-10), both as a member of Paul Wulff’s staffs, and last season at Portland State preceded Roberson’s move to Ellensburg.

With the Wildcats he succeeds Joe Lorig, who left in January to become outside linebackers coach and defensive special teams coordinator for new coach Todd Graham at Arizona State.

Lorig came to CWU with Bennett in 2008 and was an assistant head coach in addition to being defensive coordinator. He had assisted Bennett during the late 1990s at Western Oregon.

“There are several things that Malik brings to the table that really set him apart from the other coaches in the pool of candidates for this job,” Bennett said. “No. 1, he’s from the state of Washington which is very important since we sign all of our (prep) guys from here. He continues to add a significant presence and has great name recognition within our state.

“He has a Division I background, not only in the Big Sky Conference with Eastern and Portland State, but at Washington State as well. And third is his connection to Central — he had a chance to play here and got his degree from Central. That’s huge.”

As a CWU junior, Roberson led the Wildcats in tackles for loss (16) and sacks (nine), then helped them win a share of the NAIA national championship in 1995.

Roberson’s hiring completes a series of changes in Bennett’s staff, with the others being longtime assistant John Picha’s move from offensive line coach to linebackers coach and John Gariano’s move from defensive line coach to the offensive line.

The new coach’s family includes wife Ondria, twin daughters Madison and Makayla and 20-year-old son Nick.

Central begins spring practice on April 16. The Wildcats’ 2012 season starts Sept. 1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville with games following at Simon Fraser and Western Oregon before the team’s home-opener on Sept. 22 against Azusa Pacific.

CWU is coming off a 4-6 season, snapping streaks of nine straight non-losing records and five consecutive GNAC championships.

Marathon: Top spots up for grabs

March 31, 2012 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Unless the potential for a rainy run drowns the enthusiasm of too many runners, the 12th annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon will have the largest field in its history this morning.

More than 600 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers have signed up for the 26-mile, 385-yard race, which begins on State Route 821 (the Canyon Road) just south of Ellensburg and ends at the bus turnaround just north of Selah.

The Canyon Road itself will be closed to all but local traffic from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which means that many of the marathon’s walking entrants will be walking on the shoulder to avoid traffic for the first hour. Most of the race competitors won’t begin the race until the official start time of 8 a.m., but some walkers — who might take eight hours or more — will begin at 6 a.m. in hopes of finishing before the road opens to vehicle traffic.

Based on runners registered as of Friday morning, it’s tough to say who the race favorites will be. The first person to cross the finish line will almost certainly be either Jerry Martin or Tim Clark, wheelchair racers who are each likely to finish the course in less than an hour and 50 minutes. Although Martin has been a dominant racer on the Yakima course, Clark won the 2011 race in a record 1:44:13.

Among the runners, though, who will be in the lead pack — if there is one — is difficult to predict. Defending champion Chuck Engle of Coos Bay, Ore., is entered but told the Herald-Republic last week he wasn’t likely to participate.

Defending champion Camille Moseley of Cheney wasn’t entered, and while two-time women’s winner Annie Thiessen is on the registration list, she’s on vacation and, as a result, won’t be on the course.

Barring late entry by some unexpected phenom, the women’s favorite may well be someone who’s very familiar to Yakima marathon followers — and very popular among the distance-running community. That would be Mary Hanna, who even at 50 is still capable of turning in strong sub-3:20 efforts.

“My training has been going well, but I keep getting older,” Hanna says with a smile. “I thought about skipping (Yakima), because I am running Boston two weeks later. That’s a little close for me, but I have run Yakima every year since 2005. I found I couldn’t skip it, but I wish it was a week earlier.”

Another top woman may be Kayleen Uibel of Montana, who ran a 3:21 last June in winning the St. Joe River Marathon in Montana.

The top men in today’s race may include Yakima regulars Chris Warren and Cliff Richards, both of the Seattle area, as well as Olympia’s Kenn Clark and Jason Hect of Redmond.

CWU hall of fame set to induct six

March 31, 2012 by

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Six athletes — two with local ties — and one team will be inducted into Central Washington’s athletic hall of fame.

West Valley’s James Atterberry and Prosser’s Mike Huard, both of whom excelled in football for the Wildcats, will be enshrined on April 21 in Nicholson Pavilion.

Huard played fullback and tight end for coach Tom Parry from 1968-71, earning all-Evergreen Conference, all-district and NAIA West Coast honorable mention honors as a senior.

He later embarked on a 26-year football coaching career, including 17 years at Puyallup High School during which his Vikings won the 1987 state championship. Huard also coached three sons at Puyallup, quarterbacks Damon, Brock and Luke.

Damon and Brock both went on to stardom at Washington and later played in the NFL before starting careers in broadcasting. Luke went to North Carolina and is presently the offensive coordinator at Illinois State.

Atterberry caught 151 passes for 2,379 yards from 1990-93 for coach Mike Dunbar. His receiving and yardage totals rank seventh and fourth, respectively, on CWU’s career lists.

Atterberry was a four-year starter and three-time Columbia Football Association all-star who also ranks sixth in career 100-yard receiving games (six), ninth in yards per reception (15.75) and sixth in single-season yards per reception (19.11).

Also to be inducted are Mark Brown, a track and field standout in 1978-79; Rob Hippi, baseball pitcher from 1968-70; Robin McAlpine, wrestling (1981-84); Dr. Jean Putnam, field hockey player and coach from 1968-80; and the 1988 baseball team that was Central’s last such squad to qualify for the NAIA World Series.

Also, current hall of famers Dave Heaverlo and Bill North, both baseball standouts, will have their jerseys retired.

Ceremonies will include with a social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the program at 6. The event is open to the public and admission costs $35.

Tickets can be obtained by phoning Kim Thomas at 509-963-2762, and are also available at mycentral.cwu.edu/hof.

Hashimoto hammered a game-tying, two-run double in the fourth inning and a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth.

But after CWU (5-5 GNAC, 9-13 overall) scored three times in the top of the ninth for a 10-7 lead in the opener, the Yellowjackets (3-5, 10-10) responded with a vengeance in the bottom of the inning.

Central did not record an out, and the game ended on a three-run homer by MSUB first baseman Blake Loran.

In the second game, three CWU errors led to three unearned runs and a 4-0 deficit after three innings.

The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader starting today at noon.

2A state volleyball moving to Pierce College

March 30, 2012 by

From Meg Wochnick at the Daily Olympian…

State volleyball at The Evergreen State College is one-and-done.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced this week that the Class 2A state volleyball tournament will move to Pierce College in Lakewood this fall, ending the tournament’s one-year stay at Evergreen.
The 4A and 3A state volleyball tournaments will remain at Saint Martin’s University’s Marcus Pavilion for the next two years, WIAA assistant executive director Cindy Adsit said.
Last fall, the Olympia-area hosted the 4A/3A state tournament at Saint Martin’s, and the 2A state tournament at Evergreen, making it the first time state volleyball in three classifications came to South Sound.
The move of the 2A state tournament to Pierce College was prompted by logistical issues at the host site for the single-classification tournament.
Adsit, who overseas volleyball, said Thursday some of the issues that arose were the campus’ seclusion, parking and space in the College Recreation Center’s gymnasium and lobby area. She said staff members served as marshals to keep people from moving when players were serving.
“There’s just things they can’t do there (at Evergreen),” Adsit said. “It’s a difficult situation for a state tournament.”
At Pierce, teams will have a designated parking area 100 feet from the team entrance, a larger seating area for spectators, and a larger overall facility, Adsit said.
The executive board approved Saint Martin’s as the site for the 4A and 3A state tournaments for 2012 and 2013.
Adsit said a meeting next month will determine which area high schools are best to host the consolation matches. Last fall, Timberline High School was host to the consolation matches, but other options include North Thurston and Olympia.

Trimble voted state’s player of the year

March 30, 2012 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Whenever David Trimble would make his trips to Seattle to practice and play with his Friends of Hoop select basketball team, he often got singled out for his style of play.

“The guys would tease me about having an old man’s game — a little bit of everything but not very flashy,” he said. “I never was much of a showboater with the big numbers.”

Maybe so, but Trimble reminded people this season that the old man’s game still works.

And still wins.

Davis’ senior point guard was named The Associated Press boys basketball player of the year for all classifications on Thursday in voting conducted by sports writers and editors from around the state.

Trimble, who was similarly recognized as the overall player of the year by The Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune, was the driving force behind the Pirates’ drive to the Class 4A state championship — the school’s first in 47 years.

Trimble became a three-time all-state pick alongside White Swan’s Lawrence Fiander (2B) and Sunnyside Christian’s Trevor Wagenaar (1B). That trio highlighted a dozen local players earning first-team honors and seven who were tabbed honorable mention.

The other boys’ first-team picks included the SCAC senior trio of Naches Valley’s Derek Huck, Granger’s Andrew Reddout and Mabton’s Josh Sanchez and Wagenaar’s teammate, Brandon Broersma.

White Swan’s Amber Jones was a repeat 2B all-state pick on the girls side. Wapato’s Sammi Jo Blodgett and East Valley’s Yasi Mohsenian were first-team 2A picks, and Riverside Christian’s Kendra Staymates and Sunnyside Christian’s Marisa Broersma were selected at 2B and 1B, respectively.

With a relatively modest scoring average of 14.6 points this season, Trimble was surprised by his selection as player of the year.

“Honestly, I never thought people respected my type of game. Enough to get something like this, anyway,” he said. “I didn’t have the big scoring. I always wanted to make the right pass and the key play on defense instead.”

A classic example was Trimble’s stat line in Davis’ 48-42 victory over Central Valley in the state championship game — 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and no turnovers.

The day before in the Pirates’ dramatic overtime win over Bellarmine Prep in the semifinals it was nearly the same — 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.

“I appreciate everyone who saw my game and thought it was worth voting for,” said Trimble, who still did plenty of scoring during his four years at Davis with 1,428 career points.

Teammate Devonte Luckett, who was Davis’ leading scorer in the state tournament, received honorable mention all-state honors in the 4A division.

As three-time all-state picks, Fiander and Wagenaar put up big career scoring numbers as well with final tallies of 1,627 and 1,500 points, respectively.

The girls player of the year went to Prairie’s Heather Corral, who led the Falcons to the Class 3A state championship and will be attending Washington in the fall. Heather’s older sister Ashley Corral was the state player of the year in 2008 before heading to USC.

Holder Relays set for Saturday

March 30, 2012 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — A national-leading javelin thrower and a two-time Sunfair cross country champion highlight the entries for Saturday’s 38th annual Don Holder Relays track and field meet at Zaepfel Stadium.

Sean Keller of Vancouver’s Heritage High School will compete in the javelin, an event in which he is the current national leader at 230 feet, 7 inches. Because of construction on the Eisenhower campus, the javelin has been moved to the south side of the stadium.

Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale, whose last visit to Yakima saw her set a course record at the Sunfair Invitational last fall, is entered in Holder’s first event, the 3,200-meter run at 10 a.m. Neale is the current state leader in the 800 (2:11.19) and 1,600 (4:57.32).

Eleven local teams are among the 23 teams entered.

On the other side of the Yakima School District’s spring break is the 86th annual Davis Invitational at Zaepfel Stadium on April 7.
