Colleges: YVCC men fall in NWAACC quarters

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Despite a 19-point night from Cameron Jensen, Yakima Valley lost to Chemeketa 86-75 in the quarterfinals of the NWAACC Tournament on Sunday in the Toyota Center.

“It was tough,” coach Ray Funk said. “We just have to try to bounce back tomorrow.”

With the loss, Yakima Valley will play Spokane today in a losers-bracket game at 2 p.m.

“We have a chance to come away with a trophy with a victory,” Funk said.

Chemeketa’s bench players outscored YVCC 41-13.

“Chemeketa plays alot of guys,” Funk said. “The same types of players we have. Just had a hard time guarding them.”

Yakima Valley cut the Storm lead to four points with three minutes remaining, but couldn’t get any closer.

Gavin Kauffman scored a game-high 21 points for the Storm on 9 -of-17 shooting.

Beside Jensen, Amir Royal (14 points), Dabrail Henton (14) and Dallin Molina (11) reached double figures in scoring.

Molina had a game-high seven rebounds for Yakima Valley (18-11).

Chemeketa (23-7) also had double-figure scoring games from Calvin Molan (12), Jacob Begin (12), Johnny Howard (11) and Jordan Batey (10).

Central sweeps Whitworth

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Brady Kincannon and Derrick Webb had five hits apiece in a Central Washington sweep of Whitworth on Sunday at the CWU Baseball Field.

Central won the first game 10-7 and the second 9-7.

Kincannon was 3 for 4 in the first game with three doubles and an RBI. Webb was 3 for 5 with a triple.

Brandon Wang had three RBI in the opener, while Kyle Sani and Ethan Sterkel had two RBI.

In the second game, Kincannon was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBI. Webb also had two hits with a double and an RBI.

David Leid had two doubles and two RBI for Central (4-8) in the second game.

Whitworth was led in the first game by Gerhard Muelheims’ four RBI. Nick Motsinger had four RBI for the Division III Pirates (6-5-1) in the finale.

Central will open GNAC play on Saturday at home against Saint Martin’s.

Yaks earn split at Faller Invite

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima Valley earned a split of its two game at the Bill Faller Invitational, beating Skagit Valley 6-4 in the noon game before falling to Green River 11-3 in the nightcap.

Jake Fife earned the win against Skagit Valley, going 52/3 innings while striking out seven.

Ryan King and Shawn Wardian drove in back-to-back runs in the third inning for the Yaks against Skagit Valley.

Against Green River, Kyle Mall had an RBI-single and Ben Krueger went 2-for-4 for Yakima Valley.

Overall, the Yaks won won three out of four games over the weekend.

Yakima Valley will travel to Lane on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.

Central splits with Saint Martin’s

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — After allowing three runs in the top of the first inning of Sunday’s doubleheader with Saint Martin’s, Central Washington scored seven unanswered runs to win the first game and split with the Saints.

After the 7-3 triumph to open, Central fell 16-3 in the finale.

Carinna Wagner was 3 for 4 in the first game with a double, home run and three RBI.

Jordan Scherer was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and also contributed three RBI.

In the second game, Saint Martin’s (8-5-1, 6-2 GNAC) batted around in the final three innings to turn a scoreless tie into a blowout.

Wagner had two hits for Central (7-10, 6-6 GNAC), while Scherer and Jordan Zurfluh had RBI.

YVCC gets a win, tie at tourney

RICHLAND, Wash. — Yakima Valley earned a win and a tie at the NWAACC Preseason Tournament on Sunday.

YVCC defeated Douglas College of British Columbia 12-7 in the opener and tied Shoreline 3-3 due to a time limit.

Against Douglas, Arlene Futch was 4 for 4 and scored four times, while Courtney Cable had a home run and four RBI.

Ashley Reeves had a triple and drove home three runs for the Yaks (4-1-1).

Against Shoreline, Yakima Valley came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, before the game ended after seven innings.

Krysta Beach was 2 for 3 against Shoreline with a double and an RBI. Karyssa Marbet scattered six hits and struck out five batters.
