Local Report: Sterkel powers CWU baseball to victory

SPOKANE, Wash. — Ethan Sterkel had three hits, including a two-run home run, and three RBI as Central Washington routed Whitworth 13-0 in first game of a non-league baseball doubleheader Tuesday.

Whitworth (18-11-1) turned the tables in the second game, winning 12-1 to gain the split.

In the opener, Central (12-18) collected 15 hits, with all nine starters getting at least one. Brady Kincannon matched Sterkel with three, while Kyle Sani had a three-run homer.

That was plenty of offense for starter Kyle Long and relievers Drew Davidson and Deren Jones, whoc combined on a five-hit shutout.

Glen Reser had two hits, including a solo homer, in the second game for Central.

Yaks split with Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jake Fife’s RBI single in the 10th inning lifted Yakima Valley to a 5-4 victory over Spokane in the second game of an NWAACC East doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Yaks, who lost the first game 13-11, moved to 6-2 in the East and 16-6 overall.

Will Chavarria led off the 10th inning with a triple, setting up Fife’s go-ahead hit.

YVCC’s Kyle Mall was 3 for 5 in the opener with two doubles. A summary of the second game was unavailable at press time.

CE grad blanks YVCC

Hailey Bator pitched a five-inning, one-hit shutout in the first game to spark Wenatchee Valley to an 11-0, 9-0 sweep over Yakima Valley in an NWAACC East doubleheader Tuesday at Dunbar Field.

Bator, a freshman from Cle Elum, struck out six and went 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and two runs.

The Yaks (2-12, 8-13-1) host Walla Walla on Friday.

Matthews betters age at Elks

Terry Matthews turned in an even-par round of 71 at the Yakima Elks on Monday, besting his own age of 73.

Duane Oberlander, Jack VanVleck and Dan Rollins witnessed the round.

 

Gonzales gets hole-in-one

Mike Gonzales hit a hole-in-one at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Granger. Gonzales aced the 92-yard, No. 5 hole. The shot was witnessed by Mark Buechler.
