Local report: Wells leads CWU to split

April 15, 2012 by

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Central Washington freshman Heidy Wells hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning and then scattered five hits over seven innings as the Wildcats salvaged a split Sunday with a 3-1 victory against Simon Fraser in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Clan won the opener 4-3.

The Wildcats (14-25 overall, 10-17 GNAC) wore yellow jerseys as part of their fourth annual ALS fundraiser game.

Elena Carter had three hits, including a double, in the second game for the Wildcats.

On Saturday, CWU’s Maria Gau took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game one, but Kendra George’s two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Western Oregon a 2-0 victory, sparking a sweep of the Wildcats in a GNAC fastpitch doubleheader Saturday.

Bre Thomas was 4 for 7 for the day, and Carrina Wagner hit a three-run homer in the second game for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return to action Thursday at 4 p.m. in the resumption of a game protested by Saint Martin’s earlier this season. CWU will be batting with a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning against the Saints.
