Local report: Yakima Valley splits with Big Bend

YAKIMA, Wash. — Getting good pitching and plenty of hitting, Yakima Valley pounded Big Bend 11-1 in the second game of their NWAACC East Region doubleheader, earning a split Wednesday at Parker Field.

Big Bend hung on to win the opener 8-6.

In the second game, Dan Eck, Seth Darling and Joe Valley combined on a two-hitter for Yakima Valley (7-3 league).

They were backed by a 13-hit attack led by J.R. Weigel, who went 3 for 5 with a triple, two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Drayson Ito was 2 for 5 with a triple and two RBI, and Reid Martinez had a two-run double.

In the opener, Martinez was 3 for 5, Kyle Thompson 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI, and Will Chavarria had a two-run single in a five-run seventh.

Yakima Valley, now tied for first in the region with Treasure Valley, travels to Ontario, Ore., on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Chukars.

PREP BASKETBALL

Locals to play in girls All-State

CWAC player of the year Sammi Jo Blodgett of Wapato and five other Yakima Valley players will participate in the girls WIBCA All-State Games on Saturday at Seattle Christian in SeaTac.

East Valley’s Jamie Hodgson will play alongside Blodgett on the Class 2A team which will taken on the 1A at 4 p.m. The 1A squad will include Naches Valley’s Justine Benner and Fantasia Reyes of Granger.

The 2A-1A game will be preceded by the 2B, which includes White Swan’s Amber Jones and Riverside Christian’s Kendra Staymates, taking on the 1B at 2.

The 4A-3A game will cap the day at 6.

Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students with an ASB card.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Klarich to play at Concordia

Granger High graduate Janae Klarich has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Concordia University in Portland.

The Cavaliers play in the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the NAIA.

Klarich, who helped the Spartans to three straight state and twice was an all-state first-team selection, had started at point guard the past two years at Walla Walla Community College.

The Warriors finished third in last month’s NWAACC tournament and second in 2011.
