Prep Roundup: Toppenish soccer wins CWAC district title

TOPPENISH, Wash. — Striking three times in the opening 25 minutes and riding its stout defense to the finish, Toppenish’s streaking boys soccer team blanked Othello 3-0 in the CWAC district championship match on Tuesday.

The Wildcats, now 17-1 and winners of 16 straight, advance directly to state and will host a first-round match next week.

Eric Lopez scored in the eighth minute off an assist from Victor Lopez, who then knocked in a goal in the 20th minute. Jonathan Lopez assisted on Top-HI’s second and third goals.

Goalkeeper Oliver Sanchez made five saves for the Wildcats.

Othello (15-3) will host a CWAC-GNL regional match on Saturday against the winner of today’s East Valley-West Valley match in Spokane.

First half: 1. Toppenish, Eric Lopez (Victor Lopez), 8:00; 2. Toppenish, Victor Lopez (Jonathan Lopez), 20:00; 3. Toppenish, Servando Fuentes (J. Lopez), 25:00.

Second half: No scoring.

GRANDVIEW 4, ELLENSBURG 3: At Grandview, Wash., Ruben Clara’s header in the 75th minute, just four minutes after Ellensburg tied it, was the final difference for the Greyhounds.

Casey Oltman scored twice for Ellensburg, tying the match at 2-2 and 3-3.

Grandview earns the district’s No. 3 seed and advances to a CWAC-GNL regional match on Saturday against the loser of today’s Pullman-Cheney match.

HIGHLAND 3, MABTON 0: At Cowiche, , Jesus Gutierrez punched in his 26th and 27th goals of the season in the first half and Luis Nogales assisted on both and scored his own goal in the second half of the semifinal match.

Goalkeeper Antonio Gonzalez made four stops in the shutout for unbeaten Scotties (16-0).

With a state berth locked up, Highland advances to the district championship match Thursday at Wahluke against Royal, which clipped Wahluke 1-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

First half: 1, Jesus Gutierrez (Luis Nogales); 2, Gutierrez (Nogales).

Second half: 3, Nogales (David Paniagua).

Selah girls win district

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Briana Nelson’s third-place finish led Selah’s girls to a four-stroke victory over Othello in the CWAC district tournament Tuesday at Black Rock Golf Course.

Nelson carded a 93 and teammate Taylor Jones shot 95 as the Vikings edged Othello, 405-409, for the title.

The top 24 placers qualified for the CWAC-GNL regional tournament on May 15 at Apple Tree Golf Course.

Team scores: Selah 405, Othello 409, Ephrata 422, Wapato 451, East Valley 459, Ellensburg 508, Quincy 514, Toppenish 533, Grandview inc., Prosser inc.
