Wapato’s turn to feel the pain

February 5, 2010 by Scott Spruill

YAKIMA, Wash. — Kip Harris’ suffering has become Adam Strom’s pain. If you’re a CWAC boys basketball coach, cross your fingers this weekend. Maybe for the rest of the season.

Just as Harris began patching his aching and ill Selah team back together, Strom learned this week his Wapato crew will be without scoring ace Matt Guevara for the rest of the conference season with a knee injury.

Guevara suffered a partial tear of his left anterior cruciate ligament early in Saturday’s game against East Valley. Combining Wapato’s schedule and Guevara’s optimistic rehab timeline, the senior forward could return for the postseason.

“He’s been fitted for a brace, and it’s three to four weeks of intense therapy, but Matt’s going to give it a go,” Strom said. “There’s no need to rush him back for any league games. After three weeks we’ll have a better idea for district, so we’re hoping for the best.”

The streaking Wolves (10-2, 11-3), who have won eight straight to move into second place a game back of Ephrata, have six CWAC games left with four at home. The district tournament starts Feb. 22 but that’s for seeds 5 through 8. The 3-4 seeds get a first-round bye  and the top two teams go directly to the Feb. 27 semifinals.

So the good news is there’s time to work with.

And Wapato has already adjusted.

Rigo Alvarado, Efrain Reynoso, Greg Strom and Jacoby Howe all scored in double figures to outscore East Valley, 73-71. And the night before the Wolves beat fourth-place Ellensburg 50-47 despite a foul-plagued Guevara scoring only six points.

“Matt’s scoring is definitely important to us, but I’m worried more about his defense and having a senior leader on the floor,” Strom noted. “It’s more than just statistics.”

Harris got Drew Washut back from a foot injury last weekend but won’t be full strength until Nick Longmire, the CWAC’s leading scorer, recovers from mono.

Harris and Strom can commiserate tonight. Wapato hosts Selah at 7:30 p.m.

Maneuvering for district

With Davis’ boys already locking up the Columbia Division’s top seed in the 4A district tournament, the Pirates (9-0, 14-3) must wait for the Cascade Division to sort itself out before a first-round opponent is determined.

And it will definitely take some sorting.

Walla Walla (10-1, 15-2) owns a two-game lead over the state-ranked threesome of Eisenhower, Kamiakin and Richland — all 8-3 with three games remaining. Tonight’s big Cascade game is fifth-ranked Wa-Hi visiting No. 7 Richland.

Two of Eisenhower’s final three games are against teams well down the standings, leaving Saturday’s trip to Kamiakin as a real decision-maker toward who gets the No. 2 spot and a home district opener.

On the girls side, Eisenhower can lock up a Cascade district berth with a win at Eastmont tonight. In the Columbia, Davis can still catch Pasco for fourth place but the Bulldogs hold a tiebreaking sweep over the Pirates.

First or second will do

For all three of the district boys swim meets this weekend, two is the big number.

That’s how many qualifiers, aside from those meeting time standards, will automatically advance to the state championships in Federal Way on Feb. 18-20.

The CBBN 4A and Eastern Washington 2A-1A meets will be held today and Saturday at Central Washington University while West Valley travels to Vancouver for the 3A District 4-5 meet at Propstra Pool.

Richland (4A), Hanford (3A) and Pullman (2A-1A) are the respective defending champions.

They want Uncle Sam

Eisenhower’s Seth Kline was one of three CBBN football players to commit to a U.S. Service academy on Wednesday.

Kline will join Walla Walla lineman Zach Sumerlin at the Air Force Academy. Basic training for both starts in late June.

Pasco wide receiver Marques Avery committed to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Air Force, which had only one player from Washington on last year’s roster, got football commitments from seven Washingtonians on Wednesday.

Aliverti passes away

Known in Washington as the voice of Mat Classic and worldwide for his Olympic Games announcing, Ed Aliverti passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 77.

A Walla Walla High and Washington State graduate, Aliverti announced a wide range of national collegiate and international wrestling competitions, including five consecutive trips to the Olympics from 1984 to 2000.

Aliverti announced the Washington prep championships since 1964. But when all classes came under one roof in the Tacoma Dome in 1988, he was a true master of ceremonies with his knowledge, enthusiasm and stirring rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Mat Classic will not be the same without him.

All-State hoop moves

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association has moved its All-State boys games on March 20 from Franklin to Mountlake Terrace High School.

Three games have been tentatively set for noon (1B vs. 2B), 2 p.m. (1A vs. 2A) and 4 p.m. (3A vs. 4A).

Selah boys team is in medical survival mode

January 29, 2010 by Scott Spruill

YAKIMA, Wash. — Kip Harris needs to roll his players in bubble wrap and isolate them in a vacuum chamber. If not, the way things are going at Selah, he may not have anybody left.

Already shuffling his lineup with the absence of Drew Washut to a foot injury, Harris got word this week that the CWAC’s leading scorer, Nick Longmire, has mononucleosis.

And this with third-ranked Ephrata coming to town tonight.

“We have to take things one day at a time now. That’s all we can do,” Harris said. “We’re asking some kids to step and they are. We’ll just hang in there the best we can.”

Ailments have abounded for the Vikings — Pablo Chavez (split lip needed six stitches) and Daniel Hernandez (wisdom teeth removed) have also missed time recently — but when 43 points takes a seat it feels like a curse.

Despite Washut sitting out the last 10 days with plantar fasciitis, Selah (9-1, 10-2) managed to extend its win streak to eight games over the weekend and move into a share of the CWAC lead with Ephrata.

Part of the reason was Longmire ramping up his already highly productive offense, scoring 26 points against Othello and a season-high 30 the next day against Quincy.

But now with Washut and Longmire out for an indefinite period, Harris has to circle the wagons, call up some JV kids and hope for the best. And at least he has some time with the CWAC only one game into its second half. The final game of the regular season is three weeks away.

“Game by game we’ll fill the holes and do what we can,” said Harris, whose squad will have the added challenge of playing five of the last seven conference games on the road. “There’s still a lot of time left and we’ll just have to play through this. I’d rather have to deal with it now rather than district.”

Sharing the moment

For Eisenhower’s Dan Eyman, it was gratifying enough to earn the District 5 coach of the year award at last weekend’s WSCA Football Coaches Hall of Fame banquet in Bellevue.

Making it so much better was his longtime defensive coordinator Gary Jimenez standing alongside him with the assistant coach award.

“Gary’s been with me the whole time here,” Eyman said, “and he puts in an unbelievable amount of hard work. It was great to share that with him.”

Jimenez has been Eyman’s defensive coordinator for eight years and last season they directed the Cadets to a school-record 11 wins and state quarterfinal appearance.

Swimming into sunset

It was great while it lasted.

East Valley exchange student and standout swimmer Rodolphe Dienst, who ranks first or second in the Valley in six events, is heading home to Belgium and won’t be participating in the postseason.

“He was a great asset to the team,” said Selah coach Ken Yager, whose program co-ops with East Valley. “He gave the rest of the swimmers something to shoot for.”

Dienst leads the Valley in the 50 free (22.73), 100 back (59.41) and 100 breast (1:03.86).

Rams get green light

With the WIAA’s Executive Board handing down final decisions on appeals and requests last weekend, the enrollment breakdown for the 2010-2012 cycle is now complete and can be found at www.wiaa.com

West Valley and Sammamish had their requests to opt up to Class 3A approved. That brings the total number of opt-ups from 2A to 3A to 24.

Life Christian and University Prep had requests for opting up from 2B to 1A also approved. Brewster’s appeal to stay 2B and not opt up to 1A was granted.

CBBN’s power side

How’s this for depth in the Cascade Division of CBBN boys basketball: Kamiakin is ranked seventh in the state but is no better than fourth in its division.

This week’s 4A state poll has four Cascade teams — Walla Walla (5), Richland (6), Kamiakin (7) and Eisenhower (8).

Two showdowns loom this week — Eisenhower visits Walla Walla tonight and Kamiakin hosts Richland on Saturday.

From the sidelines

• Mike Hinz, a 1963 East Valley grad, was inducted into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame earlier this month. Hinz has coached Pullman to six state team titles and has been named the state’s coach of the year twice.

• Selah and Othello, both 8-0 in CWAC dual meets, will clash for the conference wrestling title in Othello tonight at 7.

• Wapato’s A.J. Yarlott averaged 11.8 points in her first six games and 18.8 in her second six, helping the Wolves take a four-game win streak into big games this weekend against Ellensburg and East Valley.

WIAA approves West Valley for 3A

January 25, 2010 by Scott Spruill

West Valley had its opt-up request to Class 3A approved by the WIAA’s Executive Board over the weekend.
With over 20 schools opting up from 2A to 3A for the 2010-2012 cycle, West Valley was bumped down to 2A and the school had initially declared it would stay in that classification. After a closer look at financial numbers and following a strong community response, the West Valley school board decided opting up was a better option.
White River will balance that move, since its appeal to drop from 3A to 2A was approved. More on that here.

CASCADE POWER: With Eisenhower’s win over third-ranked Richland on Saturday, it’s possible four teams from the CBBN Cascade Division will make the Associated Press’ state 4A poll this week. They already have in Monday’s Tacoma News Tribune top 10 with Walla Walla (4), Richland (6), Kamiakin (7) and Eisenhower (9).

MAT UPDATE: With seven champions and 205 points, Kittitas won its own 13-team Coyote Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday. Carson Arnold (112), Luis Padilla (119), Cesar Espinoza (125), Tanner Wallace (145), Nate Poulsen (152), Brett Lovell (171) and Nate Sorensen (285) were the winners for Kittitas. Ellensburg sent a partial team and placed third with three champions — Omar Zamora (103), Blake Haberman (130) and Colby Coates (135).
Toppenish had six finalists and placed second in the 27-team Clearwater Classic in Lewiston, Idaho. Armando Hernandez (103) and Aaron Arredondo (119) were winners.

From struggling to streaking for Ike girls

January 22, 2010 by Scott Spruill

YAKIMA, Wash. — Back in December when Eisenhower’s girls basketball program was going through all the pains you would expect in a season of coaching transition, Dennis Richardson could see the talented pieces and encouraging potential.

But after winning just two of seven games in December, the process clearly needed time and patience. Richardson wasn’t hired until September and didn’t have an opportunity to initiate his style and philosophy changes during summer ball.

So this might have been a season lost to a hastened transition if it weren’t for one big trend-buster — eight seniors not interested in a lost season.

After the rocky start, the Cadets came out of the holiday break on fire with a 5-1 record in January and a four-game win streak in the CBBN’s Cascade Division.

“I’ve never asked any team to make so many changes in such a short period of time,” Richardson said. “It’s an incredible credit to the girls that they were willing and mentally tough enough to accept these challenges.”

Task No. 1 was mental and Eisenhower took a big step last week winning at Walla Walla, where the team blew a 16-point lead but regrouped for a 59-57 victory that started the win streak.

“I think we shocked ourselves being up 16 and it might have gotten away from us, but that night the kids pulled together,” the coach said. “They fought back and that’s paying huge dividends now.”

Three of the four wins during the streak have been on the road, and a sampling of the margins — 2, 7 and 5 points — shows the Cadets (4-3, 7-6) have gained the ability to close games. The offensive production has gone from a 42.1 average in December to 50.3 in January.

“We’re on a nice run,” Richardson said, “and the confidence in practices and games is growing every day. It’s been exciting to see.”

Working overtime

It’s never easy winning on the road in CBBN boys basketball, and being well conditioned can make a huge difference. Davis and Sunnyside both showed that Tuesday night in preparation for their Columbia Division clash tonight.

Both teams were caught in the fourth quarter and forced into overtime — Davis at Moses Lake and Sunnyside at Wenatchee — but they combined to win the extra session 23-11 and head home with victories.

The Columbia-leading Pirates (5-0, 10-3) bested the Grizzlies (5-1, 8-3) in Yakima on Dec. 18, 59-56. But since then Sunnyside has reeled off seven straight wins. Four of the last five wins have come on the road.

Honors for Moore, McMillan

Former Prosser coach Tom Moore will be alongside his longtime friend Craig Beverlin of Kamiakin on Saturday when they are inducted into the WSCA Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Before stepping down prior to last season, Moore amassed an amazing 85.6-percent win percentage (221-37) in 23 years at Prosser. His teams won four state titles and 20 league championships.

Moore, Beverlin and Ron Rood will be inducted Saturday at Bellevue Hilton during a banquet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20.

• La Salle football coach Jack McMillan has been named the 2009 Northwest Sectional coach of the year by the National Federation of State High School Coaches Association.

While at La Salle, McMillan has compiled a 57-15 record in six seasons and qualified for the state playoffs every year.

Randleman steps down

Mark Randleman has resigned as Cle Elum’s football coach after 32 years in the program, six as an assistant and the last 26 as the head coach.

He compiled a 154-109-1 record and led the Warriors to the state playoffs 10 times.

Closing in on 300

At the risk of calling out the dreaded jinx, especially with a big game tonight, East Valley girls basketball coach Robi Raab has a chance of reaching 300 career wins with back-to-back home games this weekend.

With nine seasons at Zillah preceding seven at East Valley, Raab has built a 298-87 career record. His sixth-ranked Red Devils host No. 9 Prosser today and then play at home again on Saturday against Toppenish.

Craig Faire, coach of eighth-ranked Ellensburg, is also closing in on 300. In 19 seasons with the Bulldogs, Faire as 291 career wins.

From the sidelines

• Toppenish has hired Sara Parrish Frederiksen as its new head volleyball coach.

• Zillah junior Chris Castillo ranks 27th in the nation at 152 pounds, according to Wrestling USA Magazine.

• Eastmont’s Malachi Roberts followed up his 35-point game against Eisenhower with 38 at Hanford. His 25.15 scoring average accounts for 40.62 percent of Eastmont’s offense
