Worth the Trip for Eisenhower Boys
November 8, 2009 by Scott Spruill
Ike’s boys finish fourth after surviving pileup at start ||
PASCO, Wash. — Eisenhower’s boys cross country team was squeezed, tripped, wounded, bloodied and bandaged at the Class 4A state championships on Saturday.
And that was before the race even began, at least officially.
Despite having two reliable members of its scoring team injured in an early race multi-team pile-up that resulted in a restart, the Cadets regrouped, refocused and charged to the awards podium for a fourth-place trophy at Sun Willows Golf Course.

Jubilant Eisenhower High School runners Bryan Simison, left, and Timothy Cummings wave Border Clash qualification cards to friends in the crowd after being among the top 20 finishers in their race at the state cross country meet Nov. 7, 2009. Saving the day, in addition to the stout-hearted support group that took the brunt of the early fall, was a stellar trio that raced to individual awards and the program’s highest three-man finish ever.
Junior Timothy Cummings finished seventh in a Valley-best time of 15 minutes, 39 seconds on the 5,000-meter course, and junior German Silva and senior Bryan Simison followed his wake in 11th and 14th respectively.
The Cadets posted a score of 156 points, just six points out of third, and earned the storied program’s highest finish in five years.
“The reality is, when you see a start like that, it’s very difficult to refocus. It was a big worry,” said Ike coach Phil English. “But they all pulled together and ran tough. We didn’t lose anybody, but a couple are limping.”
Among the walking wounded was sophomore Santos Vargas, who was spiked and required a quick tape job under his right knee. Nonetheless, he ran fourth for the Cadets.
Grey Peone, another sophomore who is normally Ike’s No. 4, turned an ankle and struggled on the soft grass surface. He finished out of the scoring five but was still within four seconds of Vargas.
And that tight grouping helped secure the trophy. There was an uncomfortable wait after Simison finished for more Cadets to come into view, but when they arrived the four closers were basically together.
Impressive considering the impact of the first start, which made it roughly 150 meters before officials stopped the race and brought it back. The second start came 17 minutes later after numerous runners were treated for scrapes and spike marks.
“We had a team outside us that cut in and a bunch of us got squeezed,” Cummings said of the first start. “There wasn’t much room and guys went down. But when they brought us back we told our guys to just shake it off. Don’t worry about it, we’re OK.”
Cummings set an ideal pace, coming through the first mile under five minutes and in 16th place. Silva was 27th and Simison was 35th. Then they started moving through the field.
“I felt good and I knew guys would start falling back in the middle of the race,” Silva said. “The start was crazy, but when we got going I got my energy up and my adrenaline going.”
Coming out of the finishing chute, Cummings, Silva and Simison were each handed invitations to Border Clash 11, an Oregon-Washington all-star race staged on the Nike headquarters campus in Beaverton, Ore., in two weeks. The top 20 finishers in 4A received the coveted cards.
In that regard, it was a huge day for Eisenhower.
Junior Berenice Penaloza and sophomore Mayra Chavez got the same invitations after placing 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 4A girls race.
A pair of state-meet rookies, Penaloza clocked a Valley-best 18:56 and Chavez was a step back in 18:57. The Cadets filled in nicely for a seventh-place team finish.
“We both ran a good second mile,” said Penaloza, who came through the first mile with her teammate in 5:52. “We just slowing started passing people and the coaches said we were in the top 20.”
“That’s what we were hoping for,” smiled Chavez, waving her Border Clash card. “That first mile I was feeling real relaxed and when it was time to start moving we were able to.”
Davis sophomore Kaitlin Kaluzny improved 23 places and a half minute over last year, placing 49th in 19:39.
A surprise high-five for WV’s girls

Urlacher helps lead Rams to fifth in Class 3A meet ||
PASCO, Wash. — When a high school team considers itself fortunate just to compete at state, the results can range from a satisfied indifference to a full-on seizing of the unexpected opportunity.
For West Valley’s girls cross country team, Saturday was all about seizing the day.
Spending all but one week out of the Class 3A state coaches poll, and with two Spokane powerhouses poised to grab the two berths to Pasco, the Rams bumped one of the big contenders out last week at regionals and then surprised everyone with a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s state race at Sun Willows Golf Course.

“We’re all surprised, even a little shocked,” said senior Audrey Urlacher, a four-year state qualifier who led the Rams in her final race. “We were kind of surprised to make it so to take fifth, that’s a big accomplishment for us.”
As they have done all season, Urlacher and sophomore Margret Parobek provided West Valley with a stout 1-2, finishing 22nd and 24th on the wind-swept 5,000-meter course.
But one of the keys to last week’s regional breakthrough, and again on Saturday, was Siena Noe’s gap-closing effort as WV’s No. 3 runner. She dipped under 20 minutes as well, placing 34th.
Chantel Jaeger, the Rams’ sprint star in the spring, and Ashley Packard, rounded out the scoring team. West Valley tallied 199 points for the program’s seventh top-eight finish in the last eight years.
“They were so excited and they should be,” said WV coach Bob Allan. “We had a great race last week, but we were a little uncertain how this would go. A mile in my gut feeling was we were in the middle somewhere, maybe eighth or ninth.
“But as the race went on, the girls ran stronger and stronger,” he added. “That’s how it went last week and they carried it right into this race.”
For most of the season, Shadle Park and Mt. Spokane were both ranked in the top three and with just two state berths available the prospects appeared slim.
But while Shadle Park held form last week — and then upset top-ranked Glacier Peak on Saturday for the state title — previously unranked West Valley knocked off Mt. Spokane to earn a No. 7 ranking heading to Pasco.
For Urlacher, having company was the highlight of the day.
“Last year I ran here by myself,” she said after lowering her career best at Sun Willows to 19:20, four seconds ahead of Parobek. “Getting the whole team here was so much fun. It’s a totally different experience with a team.”
Blodgett races into Wapato history

Sophomore star nabs top-16 finish ||
PASCO, Wash. — Sammi Jo Blodgett made a big move up — all the way up to the podium for the Wapato Wolves.
And in the process, said coach Don Norman, the sophomore cross-country standout moved into the history books as the first Wapato girl to make the podium at the state meet.
Blodgett covered the 5,000-meter course at Sun Willows Golf Course in 19 minutes, 38 seconds, to place 13th and lead Yakima Valley finishers at Saturday’s Class 2A meet. Her race was good enough for a top-16 podium finish, and it marked an improvement of 12 seconds and 14 places from her performance last year.

Teammate Charlie Fiander also had a strong race, finishing 44th in 20:41. All that made Norman one happy coach.
“It was an awesome race,” Norman said. “They all had a goal to be here; they all had a goal to be better. It couldn’t have happened to three better kids,” said Norman as he also referred to Eduardo Torres’ 11th-place finish in the boys race.
In the team competition, East Valley placed 11th with 328 points as sophomore Katrina Radach led the way in 20:21, good for 35th place and more than a minute faster than her 2008 performance.
Ellensburg was one spot behind with 343 points. Senior Ellie Layman’s 21:13 paced the Bulldogs.
CLASS 1A: Ariana Cole finished her race with a sprint, then a sprawl in the finish-chute grass. “My body sometimes goes limp after I finish,” said the Highland senior after placing 10th in 20:12. That marked an improvement of 45 seconds and 16 places over 2008 and put her on the podium.
Cle Elum freshman Carlee Creager finished 23rd in 21:15 to lead her team to 13th with 289 points. Zillah, with junior Emma Tuning leading the way in 22:20, was 15th in the team standings with 368 points.
CLASS 2B-1B: Freshman April Soelberg of Riverside Christian ran 21:27, good for 16th place. The Crusaders were sixth in the eight-team meet.
Ott helps Bulldogs to fifth

E-burg soph edges Wapato’s Torres ||
PASCO, Wash. — Ellensburg coach Jeff Hashimoto and his boys cross-country team had a bit of a fright at last weekend’s district meet, fittingly run on Halloween. Saturday at the state meet, the Bulldogs put a real scare into the rest of the 16-team field.
A 10th-place finish by sophomore Jeffrey Ott, who prevailed in a duel with league rival Eduardo Torres of Wapato, led Ellensburg to a solid fifth-place team placing at the Class 2A state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course. The team, with 170 points, found itself 31 points and one place shy of a top-four finish that would have earned a trophy in a field loaded with strong westside teams.
“They were pretty motivated to run well,” said Hashimoto of the week following a Central Washington Athletic Conference district meet. The Bulldogs, favored to win district, placed second by 16 points to Selah and were a mere eight points from a fourth-place finish that would have found them staying home for state. “We just refocused and got rested,” Hashimoto said.

Ott, fifth at district, also was focused on district champion Torres once they got to the state meet. “I saw him ahead of me the first mile,” he said. “I stayed behind him, then I saw him slow down.”
Torres, a senior who for the first half of the state race lingered in sixth place just behind the lead pack, also had his eyes on Ott as the Ellensburg runner eased past him with about a mile to go. Torres made his move with about 600 meters to go, hoping to catch Ott and other nearby competitors by surprise.
“I was trying to start before everyone else,” said Torres. As for Ott, “I was trying to keep up with him.”
After a seesaw stretch run, they finished a couple of strides apart, Ott in 16 minutes, 25 seconds for the 5,000-meter race, Torres in 16:26.
Matt Glenn, Ellensburg’s No. 2 runner, placed 41st in 16:59, then teammates Liston Idler, Devin McCrary and Thatcher Montgomery followed within 26 seconds to round out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
“When you have your dream race at state, you have a good event,” Hashimoto said.
District team champion Selah placed 10th with 264 points, led by sophomore Brad Kahn, 20th in 16:38, and senior Kyle Smith, 66th in 17:21.
Toppenish senior Ben Villanueva shared Kahn’s time and was one place back as the Wildcats took a team 12th with 280 points. Christopher Farley, also a senior, ran 17:13 for 54th place for the Wildcats, who made their first boys team appearance since 1991.
Individual qualifier Mason Yates of East Valley was 27th in 16:42.
CLASS 1A: Zillah senior Johnny Barnes placed 14th in 17:17 as the Leopards similarly took 14th in the team standings.
CLASS 2B-1B: Junior Hernandez led Bickleton’s team effort with a time of 17:56, good for 19th place. The Pirates were 16th as a team.
