Rams fight back for fourth at state
February 7, 2010 by YH-R Sports
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — It’s not often a team will be happy to take fourth place, but given the uphill battle West Valley faced Saturday, the Rams were, in fact, more than pleased with that finish in the Class 3A-2A state bowling tournament.
Starting out Saturday’s 14 Baker games in third place, the Rams fell to fifth place midway through the day before a late rally helped them pass Black Hills to finish fourth at Narrows Plaza Bowl.
“We fought back and pulled it out. We’ll take it,” West Valley coach Brad Cramer said. “The way we struggled today, we’ll absolutely take it.”
This marks the second straight year the Rams have earned a state trophy, although this was a few notches below the championship trophy they earned last season.
Mark Morris turned in the best effort of the day and it was enough to overtake first-day leader Olympic for the title. Mark Morris finished with 7,062 pins to Olympic’s 6,980.
Prairie had the day’s second-best effort and it was enough to place it third at 6,804. West Valley was next at 6,712, with Black Hills fifth at 6,679.
Trailing Black Hills entering the final three games, the Rams responded with their best Baker games of the day, capped by a 187 while Black Hills closed with a 146.
“The girls knew they were behind and had to rally,” Cramer said. “We finished with three really good games.”
Cramer noted that junior Kalene Yates, one of West Valley’s subs, really stepped up and provided some consistent bowling as others just couldn’t seem to find that groove.
“She came on and really did a good job filling frames,” he said. “She stood out for me today. She stayed steady for us.”
FINAL TEAM SCORES
1, Mark Morris 7.062; 2, Olympic 6,980; 3, Prairie 6,804; 4, West Valley 6,712; 5, Black Hills 6,679; 6, Timberline 6,514; 7, Klahowya 6,507; 8, Everett 6,431.

Senior Moments for Ike
February 6, 2010 by Scott Spruill
12th-graders key Cadet win after pre-game recognition ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Senior night was everything Eisenhower’s boys could have hoped for Friday night.
A festive pre-game ceremony for seven seniors and their parents, a dazzling 16-1 start to the game and a comfortable 78-57 win in the final home game of the regular season.
An ideal build-up to a big road game tonight. Huge game, actually, according to the coach.
“That was a fun senior night for the kids,” said Pat Fitterer. “We came out great and had a real focus. Now, tomorrow at Kamiakin, that’s a huge playoff-type game. We need to take what we had tonight and bring it with us.”

Today’s trip to sixth-ranked Kamiakin will have big implications for district seeding, but Friday was all about easy smiles and lots of offense.
Especially by James Lopez.
Highlighting a dominating 27-6 third quarter, the senior point guard hit all six of his shots in the breakaway period and finished with a season-high 29 points. He also had six steals and five assists.
“I look at this game as the biggest night of my high school career,” Lopez said. “It felt good the whole way. We got a nice start, I hit a couple fadeaways and felt real smooth. It was a great night.”
Lopez sank three 3-pointers, as did senior teammate Nathan Mount en route to his 15 points. And Ryan Watson made another big senior contribution with a solid double-double of 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting and 15 rebounds.
When Lopez cast in his first 3-pointer less than four minutes into the game, the Cadets had a 16-1 lead. They let Eastmont back in the game in the second quarter but the third period — when Ike hit 11 of 14 shots — was a backbreaker.
Early in the final period, the Cadets led by 35.
That’s a long way from Eisenhower escaping with a 69-64 win at Eastmont last month, but this time Malachi Roberts didn’t go off for 37 points, his career high.
And Lopez was in on that, too.
“At first we went box-and-1 with James on him and he did a great job,” Fitterer said. “Then we went straight man. Last time we just didn’t stay with him.”
Roberts had nine points through three quarters and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds.
“He’s a great athlete, inside and outside — definitely one of the top two or three in the league,” Lopez said. “He had 37 last time so for him to have nine (in three quarters), I feel pretty good about that.”
As for tonight, the Cadets (9-3, 14-4) need a win to stay on track for the Cascade Division’s No. 2 seed and a home game in the first round of the CBBN district tournament.
Eisenhower is tied for second with Richland, which knocked off first-place Walla Walla, 67-65. Kamiakin, however, did not tune up as well as Ike did Friday night, falling at Hanford 68-65 to slip into fourth.

Bowling: West Valley 3rd in team standings
February 6, 2010 by YH-R Sports
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — There wasn’t a repeat individual champion for West Valley, but, despite an “up and down” day, the Rams are still in position to successfully defend their team title in the Class 3A-2A state bowling tournament.
Mandy Cramer was unable to repeat as individual champion, finishing 17th during Friday’s individual competition at Narrows Plaza Bowl.
But alongside her, Ally Delozier (13th), Alyssa Deaton (20th), Rose Nelson (21st) and Miki Campbell (35th), the Rams managed to wind up in third place after Friday’s six team games,
“We were up and down today. We’re in third place, but we could be far worse off,” West Valley coach Brad Cramer said of his team, which stands 146 pins behind first-place Olympic, the team the Rams edged for last season’s team crown.
West Valley was just 73 pins off the lead after the fourth of six team games, but a poor fifth game dropped the Rams 204 pins off the pace. However, the Rams regrouped to finish with their best game of the day, getting within striking distance heading into today’s 14 Baker games that will determine the champion.
“We finished on a good note, so the girls feel pretty good about themselves,” Cramer said. “We put ourselves in a pretty good spot … if we can get consistent and the girls fill their frames like they can.
“We feel like we have a shot to make a run at first place.”
In Friday’s individual competition, Delozier, a freshman, topped the Rams with a 997 total that included a 200 in the second of the six games. Cramer rolled a 946, Deaton had a 941 that featured a closing-game 202, Nelson had a 927, and Campbell was at 870.
Selah’s Samantha Sutton was 26th with a 904 total, and Sunnyside’s Meleesha Maltos was 44th with an 822.
There were no local 4A qualifiers.
Although none of the Rams made a serious run at the individual crown, their tightly bunched scoring gave West Valley a total of 4,681 pins.
Olympic was first at 4,827, with Mark Morris second at 4,812. The Rams hold a 72-pin lead over fourth-place Black Hills, with none of the other eight teams breaking the 4,600-pin threshold.

Far from a starter, Reilly has a start
February 6, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — He has gotten his foot in the door, if not on the playing field.
But then Mike Reilly has been down this competitive road before, and has been undeterred by such speed bumps.
“No playing time yet,” the former Central Washington quarterback said of his first NFL season, which consisted of three weeks as a Green Bay practice squad member and four on the St. Louis active roster. “But I spent four weeks with the Rams learning the offense and taking on the role of emergency backup. So at least I was suited up and standing on the sidelines, ready to go in.”
Reilly and his wife, Jessica, had recently returned to their home in Kennewick when contacted by yours truly. Their 1,900-mile drive had been complicated by harsh conditions in the Midwest — “there were maybe 125 to 150 cars off the road and there were semis upside down in the medians,” Reilly reported — and his football year had been an emotional roller coaster.
It started on a down note when Reilly wasn’t chosen in April’s NFL draft, but reversed itself when he was signed as a free agent by defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh.
Reilly was cut by the Steelers just prior to the start of the regular season, however, and returned to Kennewick where he put his CWU engineering degree to work.
He and Jessica bought a house, and while Reilly settled into something of a 9-to-5 routine, he continued to work out, wait and hope.
In November, the Packers called and signed him to their practice squad. And while he wasn’t an active member of the team, he at least was in an NFL camp. Then the Rams, whose quarterback ranks had been thinned by injuries to starter Marc Bulger and backup Kyle Boller, signed Reilly to their active roster.
That meant wearing a uniform on game day. It also meant substantially more money, from the $5,200 (with no benefits) practice players earn weekly to approximately $18,000 as a full-fledged roster member.
So for his seven weeks as an NFL player, including three as a practice squad member, Reilly banked close to $90,000, according to the league’s pay schedule.
He is also signed through the 2010 season, for which the minimum NFL salary will be $325,000.
So the move from Washington State, where Reilly became convinced he would not get to play, to Central, where he started every game for four years, turned out golden.
It’s true that the Rams were abysmal, finishing 1-15, but from such rubble can be found opportunity for a comparative unknown like Reilly.
“When a team goes 1-15, there are obviously issues and you figure there will be a lot of changes during the offseason,” he said. “From what I’ve heard from my agent, and some other people, the GM (Billy Devaney) is pretty high on me. That they signed me through 2010 shows they hopefully have some sort of plan for me.”
And if the Rams don’t have a plan for him, Reilly does for them.
“My thing is to go out and win the starting job for next year,” he said, “and that should always been your approach whether you’re a freshman in high school or a senior in college or whatever.”
Now that he has a functional grasp of the West Coast offense deployed by St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo — and also by Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy — Reilly figures he’s worth more.
“The reason Brett Favre was able to come to Minnesota in the middle of training camp and take over is because the Vikings run the West Coast offense,” he said. “A lot of teams run it. So if you know it, it makes you more valuable as a quarterback.”
And even if Reilly has yet to take his first NFL snap, his seven-week career has enriched him personally.
“In Green Bay, to be on the sideline in Lambeau (Field) and see the crowd and watch guys do the Lambeau leap — that was great,” he said. “And to be in St. Louis, to suit up and wear the jersey and pads and go through pregame warmups knowing, OK, if something happens, I’m going to go in the game.
“It was good to get that feeling back. It had been awhile.”
And for Mike Reilly, maybe the next such period will not last nearly as long.
